Ms. Kay teaches foundational music theory and private piano lessons for children from Pre-K through eighth grade, with a special love for nurturing young beginners. Her approach is intentionally gentle, encouraging, uplifting, and joy-filled—progress over perfection, encouragement over stress, and enjoyment over pressure. As a longtime homeschooling mother and Greater Waco educator, she is also comfortable supporting children who learn in unique ways. Piano practice should begin as something short, peaceful, and positive—not as a long daily battle. Ms. Kay affectionately calls early exploration “Piano Doodling.” Because beginner songs are very short, just a few happy minutes once or twice each day can establish a healthy routine and create meaningful progress. Practice time grows naturally as a student’s skills and attention span develop. The goal is consistency, thoughtful repetition, and encouragement—not pressure or perfection.Engagements range from two weeks for focused audits to several months for comprehensive transformation.

An acoustic piano offers the richest touch and tone, but a quality digital piano or keyboard can also be an excellent place to begin. For the strongest long-term learning experience, Ms. Kay recommends 88 weighted, touch-sensitive keys and a working sustain pedal. A 76-key instrument is also a good option, while 61 keys can serve a new beginner but may be outgrown sooner. If your family currently has only a small keyboard—or no instrument yet—lessons can still begin while you plan for an upgrade. Studio recitals are not competitions for perfection. They are joyful opportunities for students to share their growing musicianship, creativity, courage, and hard work. Participation is optional but very valuable. Students who choose to perform commit to practicing their recital music consistently at home, without stress or unreasonable pressure.
